WELCOME Living Systems, Inc. develops technology for physical activity monitoring. To develop and license technology for a new generation of personal information products which promote physical well-being and health. Living Systems’ technologies involve the use of accelerometers—devices that detect movement. Our proprietary position in these fields is our patented step-by-step analysis, obtaining more precise measurements than competing technologies that analyze data over arbitrary time intervals. We are focused on two key application areas: (1) Physical activity monitoring—measuring energy expenditure related to exercise and daily living. Obesity and inactivity are major epidemics facing our nation. Our technologies provide new tools to researchers and individuals invested in weight management. Future technology plans include a “dual-sensor” monitor more accurate than either accelerometry or heart rate monitoring alone. (2) Gait analysis—detecting and quantifying abnormal gait for diagnosis, promotion of independence, well-being and rehabilitation. Certain gait abnormalities are indicative of a risk of falling. This technology will alert the users and their caregivers to increased risk, preventing potentially fatal falls. LSI holds U.S. Patents 6,135,951 (stride-based accelerometry) and 5,976,083 (fitness assessment). Living Systems is primarily focused on niche markets with low entry barriers and high gross margins. These include weight management programs, public health, home health care, heart attack rehabilitation, stroke rehabilitation, amputee recovery and rehabilitation, elder care, Parkinson’s care and diabetes management. Beyond niche markets lie the large consumer markets of sports and fitness. Living Systems obtains funding for research and development through federal grants, with an aim to commercialize the resulting technology through licensing to corporate partners. We have received two National Institutes of Health grants for R&D. LSI operates in strategic alliance with a major, global, publicly traded corporation to license our technologies Download our company overview, LSI-at-a-Glance (PDF). |
